Winter Admission

For students admitted during the winter quarter, the size of their first-year classes will be smaller than for the fall entrants, usually one third to half the size. During the vitally important first year of studies, these students see increased opportunities for contact with faculty. For second-year classes, winter-entering students will be combined with the fall entrants into two class groups that are likely to be about equal in size.

Students who are in the winter-term entering class should consider several special circumstances that apply to them. Although students may opt to take summer terms off, winter-entering students may not take a break during the summer of their first year in the program. Because WSCC does not offer all courses in the curriculum during each enrollment period, students who take first quarter in the winter must enroll during summer term for third-quarter classes in order to be eligible to continue into second-year course work in the fall. Otherwise, they would have to take a leave of absence from the College for at least nine months for third-quarter course work to be available again.

Students considering winter entry are invited to discuss this and other considerations with the Admissions staff.

Notification of a Decision

Applicants are reviewed on an ongoing basis when the necessary documents have been received and assembled in the Admissions Office. The process of review of a completed file typically takes two weeks and leads to one of these decisions:

  • Acceptance: When documentation confirms that all prerequisites have been met and evaluation shows that the applicant meets all objective and subjective selection criteria, an offer of acceptance will be made.
  • Contingent Acceptance: When the file includes enough information for the Admissions Office to judge that the applicant seems likely to meet the standards for acceptance, even though some prerequisites still remain to be completed, a contingent acceptance may be offered. Regular acceptance will subsequently be offered when the Admissions Office determines that all contingencies have been fulfilled and that the student continues to meet the selection standards.
  • Deferral: Even when all necessary documents have been received, the decision may be reached that either the entering class has been filled or some questions still remain. This situation may arise, for instance, when the amount of completed science course work at the time of application is insufficient for the admissions staff to assess relevant academic strength. The student may also request in writing that admission be deferred. These requests are considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Rejection: When the information presented in a file does not meet WSCC selection criteria, the candidate will be rejected. Except in the case where a rejection is the result of failure to meet objective CCE minimums, the reasons for a rejection will not be open for discussion. Some rejected applicants will choose to update their credentials and resubmit their applications. In such cases, candidates should allow one academic year to elapse before reapplying and are advised to do so only when they have a clear strategy for strengthening their applications.

Tuition Deposits

When students are offered an acceptance or contingent acceptance, they are expected to submit a non-refundable deposit toward their first-quarter tuition. If the deposit is not received or arrangements made with the Admissions Office within two weeks, the offer of acceptance may be withdrawn. If a student defers entry after the tuition deposit has been paid, he or she is required to submit an additional non-refundable tuition deposit, which will be recorded as an additional credit toward the first-quarter tuition.
