Student Life: ASB (Associated Student Body) Leadership

Meet the ASB Representatives: their bios & photographs are coming soon.

Maya Dokson --ASB President

Pres. MayaFor those of you who don’t already know me, my name is Maya Dokson. I grew up in western Washington, graduated high school in Colorado, and went to college in Nebraska. I think of myself as a very health conscience person. I have been playing basketball, soccer, and softball since I was in elementary school, and I love to run, hike, swim, and bike as well. School is also very important to me, but without all my outside activities I would probably go crazy. I’m sure most of you, my fellow students can relate. At least I hope so, because as ASB president I have to represent all of you when it comes to student issues at WSCC.

I have been a chiropractic patient since I was around six years old. My chiropractor was actually a WSCC graduate who practices up in Bellingham, WA. Of course when he was my chiropractor I could have cared less where he went to school because I had no idea I would be going into the same field as him. I didn’t know I was going to become a chiropractor until I was a freshman in college. When I decided to go into chiropractic I researched many schools and the different philosophies behind each one. It was an easy choice when I read about WSCC. I know there are other schools out there with similar philosophies and programs, but then I added on the location of school, I knew this was the school for me.

I started at Western States in January 2003. I have been involved in ASB since the beginning. I was class rep. for my first two quarters, and I became Events coordinator in my third quarter. I was elected ASB President in the spring of 2004. As an ASB officer I’ve become very comfortable with the meeting and decision making process needed to get things accomplished. I’ve also had the opportunity to build a relationship with many of the administrators. This will play an important role in my presidency. One of my biggest goals is to constantly work to improve campus-wide communication. The current ASB has come along way in this past term and the town hall meetings established by Bobby Maybee have helped immensely, and the tradition will continue via ASB and the student services director. However, there is always room for improvement.

Although I have really enjoyed my past year and a half at WSCC, and I think things run fairly smoothly around here, I think most of us agree that minor changes can always be made to improve campus life in all aspects of our educational system and professional training. However, I really don’t like to sit around and complain, instead I’ve decided to be pro-active. I want to make my time at WSCC go as smoothly as possible. This includes campus issues, educational issues, and the availability of extra-curricular activities.
The one promise I know I can make to you with no reservations is to be completely open to suggestion. My job as ASB president will be to represent the student body. This means it really doesn’t matter what I think as an individual, it only matters what the majority of my peers think. So, I promise to use my best judgment in every situation put before me, and to always represent all of you as a whole. I encourage all of the student body to use ASB to there full advantage. Farewell, and enjoy your road to becoming a doctor of chiropractic!!

Jonathan Ramirez --ASB Vice President

VP JonathanI am Jonathan Ramirez, the ASB Vice-President, and I appreciate this opportunity to introduce myself to the student body. My parents are from Colombia, but they were living in Caracas, Venezuela when I came into the family. At the age of eight we moved to the United States to join extended family members already living in Long Island, New York. I grew up in Freeport, New York. I attended Cornell University with plans for a career in a health-related field. Eventually I decided on chiropractic and graduated with a B.S. in biology with a concentration in neurobiology. I have now lived in Portland for about 2 years and have enjoyed being on the west coast. My wife is Emily, we have a son named Simeon, and another child due to arrive in late February. I enjoy Latin dancing, bike riding (preferably out of the rain), and a variety of outdoor activities. I have just under a year and a half left before graduating from Western States. I have enjoyed my studies here at Western States. Furthermore, I have a great desire to improve the campus and provide you with informative guest speakers. Please approach me with concerns or ideas you may have to improve your studies or student life on campus.

Amanda Sheldon --ASB Treasurer

Treasurer AmandaMy name is Amanda Sheldon, I am the ASB Treasurer. This fall, I will be starting 7th quarter here at WSCC. Currently, I am taking the quarter off and enjoying the long summer break. It has very quickly almost come to an end, but I wouldn't have had it any other way. I strongly suggest if you have the time, take a quarter or two off throughout your WSCC career and relax! It is very easy to get burned out, and taking some time for yourself helps a great deal.

Anyway, about me... I am originally from Michigan, and I graduated from Michigan State University with a Kinesiology degree. I am a very spirited alum... I love college sports, especially basketball. I moved to Portland in December 2002 after attending Life University for a short time (half a quarter) before they lost their accreditation... Yes I am a Life transfer! The move here has been nothing but great for me in all aspects. I have been exposed to both “sides” of chiropractic and it has really opened my eyes to say the very least. Also, I got to move to the West Coast, which is a big deal for someone who previously hadn’t been west of Chicago! In my spare time (which is quite limited during the quarter!) I enjoy hiking, camping, traveling, music, reading, and just relaxing!

My history with ASB started as a class rep. It was a great way for me to get involved with something that actually made a difference to students. I did that for three quarters, until finally I realized that I wanted more out of ASB. That's when I decided to run for Treasurer. Our terms run for a year, and it has only begun last quarter. Being able to get to know administrators and other students has also been a great experience I have gained through being a part of ASB. So far, ASB has been nothing but positive for me, and I look forward to more of the same. If anyone has any questions regarding being a class rep, or ASB in general, please do not hesitate to ask! Thanks for reading! My email address here is asheldon@wschiro.edu

Christopher Duncan --ASB Secretary

Chris-SecretaryI am Christopher Duncan, your secretary. I am an army brat, and so, grew up all over the world. The majority of that time I spent in Germany, where I graduated from Heidelberg High School. I served the people of England for two years, on a church mission. Most recently I graduated from UCMT (Utah College of Massage Therapy), and UVSC (Utah Valley State College).

I came to Oregon specifically to attend WSCC, and partly because the climate up here reminds me of Germany. I’ve seen a lot of the world, and have come to love the many different kinds of people that this earth has to offer. Another draw to the Portland area has been the surrounding landscape. I love camping, climbing and just about anything out of doors. I’ve enjoyed sports, particularly soccer, and volleyball my entire life. I like to be involved in life around me. There are moments that call for sitting back and watching, but I have found most of the fun comes from embarrassing life.

On my way to chiropractic school I became a licensed massage therapist, and have been for 4 years now. I gained great experience in running my own business, and working with other health care professionals. Getting to know people, and learning how to work with them has been a great benefit in my life. One of the many things that I learned as a therapist is the importance of records, and communication which I will utilize as ASB secretary. I look forward to helping to improve the lines of communication here at Western States, through being the information arm of ASB. I have done this kind of work before as student body publicist, journalist, and business owner.

I am married to the bubbliest woman in the world, Trishelle, and have been for 5 years, and that has made me the happiest man. We have two daughters Holly who is nearly three months old, and our first daughter, Christyn, a very energetic 3 year old who loves flowers, and dress up.
I look forward to serving you. I am here to represent you, and I will, with any ideas, questions, or requests that you present me with. You can contact me in person, or, via email at CDuncan@wschiro.edu

Adam Mohr-- ASB Events Coordinator

Hello, my name is Adam Mohr and I am your events coordinator. I will start by giving you a little bit of my personal background. I was born in Phoenix and I lived in different parts of Arizona until I was eight. Oregon was my next home where I have lived for the past fifteen years. I went to high school at North Salem High School where I played soccer and tennis.

I tried going to college on the east coast in Arlington, Virginia but I missed Oregon so I came back and went to Pacific University where I also played soccer and tennis. In my time at Pacific I became involved in a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) sanctioned committee in which I served at the national level representing student-athletes from around the country. My experiences with the NCAA have allowed me to meet many new people and more importantly I have gained numerous leadership skills.

Some of the things you can look forward to this year are the Halloween Party, Talent Show/Lip Snyc, local sporting events and the quarterly BBQ Booksale's with this Fall's BBQ Booksale to include a dunk tank and snow cones. I would also like to take this opportunity to ask all of you for your help with any ideas for events.

My email is AZinn@wschiro.edu and my phone number is 503-539-6110 and I am sure you will see me on campus.

Robert Perkes --ASB Sports Coordinator

Bob-SportsHi my name is Robert Perkes. I am a 5th quarter student from Spokane WA. I am happily married to my cute wife Britta and a proud papa to my young son Rex. I never thought I would be this old! (26) I am the oldest of 4 children and have a bossy side to me because of it.
I am the Sports Coordinator at WSCC. I have been involved in athletics and recreation my entire life. I worked on the intramural staff at BYU Idaho in Rexburg Idaho as well as competed athletically for them on the wrestling mat before coming to WSCC. I was also very involved with the athletic division of the activities program there.

My experience on the intramural staff taught me insights into participation and an appreciation for many sports/activities that I otherwise wouldn’t have had. I hope to make more opportunities available to people who desire them. I also hope to make available more information about public leagues and activities, thereby increasing our presence and participation in the community. My email address here is rperkes@wschiro.edu.
